Where have all the smooth jazz radio stations gone?

In the case of CD101.9 in New York, the only smooth jazz station changed its format from smooth jazz to rock in the blink of an eye without any notice to its listeners. One day it was jazz, the next day it was rock. To my knowledge, there was never an on air explanation. I finally found out that it all came down to advertising dollars. It was not that the genre didn’t have a healthy share of listeners, but that they didn’t translate into advertising dollars. So even though the executives  admit, smooth jazz had just as many listeners, if not more than rock, the audience listening to rock is more likely to buy the products advertised on a rock station than jazz listeners are. Therefore the disappearance was strictly a business decision.

This did not happen only in New York, but natiowide. However, there are many ways to keep up with smooth jazz via the internet. There are web radio stations showcasing name artists as well as independent artist such as www.jazzradio.com , www.smoothjazz.com and www.365live.com  There are websites dedicated to bringing you the latest news about smooth jazz CD releases and summer jazz concerts. You can find several links to some of these sites right here on EOM, and we’ll also be updating you on relevent information as we come by it. If you have anything you’d like to share feel free to do so.
